Round and Sculpted Coffee Tables for Traditional Rooms

Quick answer: A round coffee table suits square seating arrangements and tight walkways. Choose a diameter about half to two-thirds the sofa length, keep 16–18 inches to the seat, and match the height to the sofa cushion. Use coasters and re-oil the top once or twice a year.

Pedestal rounds

When a round table is the right choice

Round and gently sculpted tables work in more traditional rooms than people expect. Their curves echo turned legs, rolled sofa arms and wingback chairs, and they soften a room full of straight lines.

Good fits for a round table

Conversation groupings: two chairs facing a loveseat, where every seat should reach the table equally.
Small or busy rooms: no corners to catch knees or toddlers.
Sectionals: a round shape fills the inside corner of an L-shaped sofa better than a rectangle.
Rooms with a patterned rug: a circle reads cleanly against stripes or medallions.

Styling the top

Keep the arrangement in the center with clear space around the edge: a low tray, a small stack of books and something living, such as a potted fern. Leave room for cups and a board game.

Care for a well-used top

Coffee tables take more wear than any other piece. Rotate the table a quarter turn every few months so sun and use spread evenly, and keep coasters in a small box on the table where guests can find them. Explore more styles in our tables and desks.
